Thai Address Terms Explained

Thai addresses use a structure that can feel unfamiliar if you are used to Western formats. These terms appear on immigration forms, bank documents, leases, and official records.

Understanding what each part means will help you complete forms correctly and avoid confusion.

How Thai addresses work

Thai addresses are usually written from smaller areas to larger areas.

House number → Road / Soi → Tambon → Amphur → Province → Postal code

Key Thai address terms

ตำบล (Tambon)

Subdistrict.

This is the local area where your condo or house is located. Think of it as your immediate neighbourhood or local zone.

Example: Khwaeng Khlong Tan Nuea

อำเภอ (Amphur / Amphoe)

District.

A larger area that contains multiple tambons. Think of it as a district or borough.

Example: Khet Watthana

จังหวัด (Changwat)

Province.

This is the main region. Bangkok is both a city and a province.

Example: Bangkok

รหัสไปรษณีย์ (Rahas Praisani)

Postal code.

This is the postcode used for mail and official address matching.

Example: 10110

ถนน (Thanon)

Road name.

This is the main road name that appears in your address.

Example: Sukhumvit Road, Rama IV Road

ซอย (Soi)

Side street or alley.

This is commonly used in Thai addresses, especially in cities and residential areas.

Example: Sukhumvit Soi 11, Soi Thong Lor, Ekkamai Soi 12

Why people get confused

Tambon and Amphur are the most commonly mixed up fields. They are always used together and must match your official address.
English spellings can vary. The same location may appear differently depending on the source document.
Bangkok can be especially confusing because it often uses Khwaeng and Khet instead of Tambon and Amphur.

Bangkok terms: Khet and Khwaeng

In Bangkok, Khet is used instead of Amphur, and Khwaeng is used instead of Tambon. They serve the same purpose, but the labels are different because Bangkok uses its own administrative structure.

Bangkok is divided into 50 Khet (districts) and around 180 Khwaeng (sub-districts).

Example: Khet Watthana is the district, and Khwaeng Khlong Tan Nuea is the smaller local area within it.

Other well-known Bangkok examples include Khet Pathum Wan, Khet Bang Rak, and Khet Phaya Thai. Their sub-districts include places such as Lumphini, Si Lom, and Sam Sen Nai.

Final note

You do not need to read Thai fluently to complete forms, but recognising these key terms will make the process much smoother and help avoid mistakes. Always use the correct format across all documents, as inconsistencies can lead to problems such as your online 90 day report being declined.
