Thai Year Explained
Why Thai dates can look 543 years ahead, and how to convert them without second-guessing your paperwork.
Thailand commonly uses the Buddhist Era, written as B.E. in English or พ.ศ. in Thai. For modern documents, the Buddhist Era year is 543 years ahead of the Western Gregorian year.
That is why 2569 B.E. is 2026, 2568 B.E. is 2025, and 2567 B.E. is 2024. The day and month are usually the same as the Gregorian calendar; the year number is the part that changes.

Why the Thai year is different
The Thai year is different because the official Thai year numbering is tied to Buddhist tradition rather than to the Christian-era numbering used by the Gregorian calendar. The Buddhist Era is counted from the traditional year of the Buddha attaining parinirvana, so Thai B.E. dates sit 543 years ahead of C.E. dates in modern use.
In practical terms, Thailand uses familiar modern days and months for official dates, but many government forms, certificates, bank records, contracts, and immigration papers show the year in B.E. instead of C.E.
The simple conversion
Example: 2569 - 543 = 2026.
Example: 2026 + 543 = 2569.
Short history
Traditional calendars and local eras
Siam used lunar and era-based systems for religious, cultural, and civil purposes. Buddhist dates remained important because Buddhism was central to public life.
Solar civil calendar
King Chulalongkorn's reign brought a solar-style civil calendar for official use, making days and months easier to align with international systems.
Buddhist Era year numbering
Thailand moved civil year numbering to the Buddhist Era, so official dates used B.E. years rather than older local era counts.
January 1 became New Year
The Calendar Years Act made 2483 B.E. end on 31 December 1940 and 2484 B.E. begin on 1 January 1941. Modern Thai calendar years have aligned with January to December since then.
A note about older documents
The 543-year rule is the right everyday shortcut for modern Thai paperwork. Historical dates can be more complicated because the official Thai New Year moved over time. For pre-1941 documents, especially dates in January, February, and March, check the historical context before relying on a quick conversion.
